The German parliament will elect Social Democrat Olaf Scholz as the country’s chancellor on Wednesday, heralding a new political era after 16 years of conservative-led rule under Angela Merkel.

Scholz takes office at the head of a coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and liberal Free Democrats, which has pledged to champion social justice, accelerate efforts to cut carbon emissions and maintain fiscal discipline.
