Omicron Australia: Cruise revellers test positive to Covid as Melbourne records first Omicron case

Omicron infiltrates Australia: Hundreds exposed to the virus at a ‘super spreader’ boat party on Sydney Harbour- as the first case of the mutant strain is recorded in Melbourne

Dozens of revellers have been plunged into isolation, amid fears a dance party cruise could become an Omicron super spreader event, as Melbourne records its first case of the variant.

Five attendees who attended the Friday night cruise on Sydney Harbour so far have tested positive to Covid-19 with at least two ‘likely’ to have the new Omicron variant, based on preliminary testing.

Further genome sequencing is now underway.

Health authorities are now scrambling to contact 140 revellers who attended the Flow Fridays – 90s Themed Boat Party, which left King Street Wharf 9 at 7.30pm and returned about 11pm.

Individuals who were on board and members of their households are urged to immediately get tested and isolate.

The cruise was jointly marketed as ‘Flow Fridays – 90s Themed Boat Party’ and ‘Freaky Sunday Afrovibe: The Last Dance’.

NSW recorded 260 on Tuesday, up from 208 reported 24 hours earlier.

More to come.
