A child has been killed after being hit by a car while walking with his mother to school in Sydney’s inner west. 

The young boy was hit by a car near a playground at the intersection of Mitchell Street and Glebe Street, in Glebe, at 8.15am on Friday. 

Emergency services were called and they attempted to treat the boy before he died at the scene.

‘On arrival, officers attached to Leichhardt Police Area Command were told a young boy had been hit by a car,’ NSW Police said.

‘He was unresponsive and died at the scene.’ 

Officers have closed down Glebe Street as they investigate the incident.

Drivers have been told to plan alternative routes. 

Resident Donna Paxton said the mother had been walking her son to school.

‘I heard some yelling and some screaming and I heard the sirens so I came down,’ she told The Daily Telegraph.

‘The boy was in the middle of the road.’
