‘Birkenstock took weeks to refund me and cost me £94 in interest’

Dear Katie,

I ordered a few pairs of sandals from birkenstock.com but they weren’t right so I decided to return them. I sent them back in the post and Birkenstock told me my refund would be on the way within 10 days.

That was seven weeks ago and my refund has only just arrived back in my bank account. When I phoned I was told it was coming, but it never did.

As a result of the late payment, I have now incurred interest on my credit card of £94, which is deeply distressing. I told Birkenstock about this and supplied them with proof of this charge. However, they have done nothing about it and I have received no apology.

Dear reader,

That Birkenstock took this long to issue your refund is simply inexcusable, and yours isn’t the only story I’ve heard about slow refunds at this company. From a reputable global brand I’d have expected better.

That said, I can’t help feeling you could have done more to avoid this nasty £94 credit card charge. In future you should set up a direct debit to pay it off every month to avoid racking up interest like this.

The good news is that, despite being initially slow to respond to me, Birkenstock has now agreed to cover your £94 charge in full. You are hugely relieved.
